About

A framework for understanding AI in real work

Model Culture is a framework, a methodology, an evaluation architecture, and an evidence system for understanding AI in real work. It exists to help organizations determine which intelligence should do which job, under which conditions, and preserve the evidence explaining why.

The problem

The useful answer is not a model name

Organizations often make technology decisions based on the product name, the vendor, or a benchmark, while the actual outcome depends on how the technology behaves inside the work itself.

AI makes that problem significantly harder. A model name does not tell you which version was evaluated, what role it was given, how it was configured, what surrounded it, where it ran, or how it behaved under the conditions that matter to the organization.

Founder

Built from the problem, not from the model

Dan Lane, founder of Model Culture.

Founder, Model Culture

Dan Lane

  • Enterprise AI & Infrastructure
  • Former CIO & CTO
  • Solutions Architecture & Technical GTM

Model Culture was founded by Dan Lane, an enterprise technology and AI infrastructure leader whose career has spanned software development, solutions architecture, enterprise infrastructure, CIO and CTO leadership, technical go-to-market, and applied AI.

Over that career, one pattern kept repeating: organizations often make technology decisions based on the product name, the vendor, or a benchmark, while the actual outcome depends on how the technology behaves inside the work itself.

AI makes that problem significantly harder. A model name does not tell you which version was evaluated, what role it was given, how it was configured, what surrounded it, where it ran, or how it behaved under the conditions that matter to the organization. Model Culture grew from that problem.

The goal is not to declare one model universally better than another. It is to help organizations understand which intelligence configuration fits a particular job, under particular conditions, and preserve the evidence explaining why.

Dan continues to develop Model Culture through hands-on experimentation with local, private, hybrid, and commercial AI systems, with a focus on enterprise AI architecture, workload fit, model behavior, infrastructure, and the operational decisions required to use AI responsibly and effectively.

Two names

The framework and the application

Model Culture is the framework and methodology. Model Culture Studio is the private application used to operationalize and develop it.

Framework

Model Culture

Model Culture is the framework, methodology, evaluation architecture, evidence system, research direction, and brand for understanding AI in real work. It focuses on the full intelligence configuration, not simply the name of a model.

Private application

Model Culture Studio

Model Culture Studio is a working private R&D and evaluation application used to operationalize and develop that methodology. It supports structured evaluation, comparison of completed evaluations, and inspection of the evidence behind findings.

It is not offered as a public self-service product.

Provider independence

A company may rent its intelligence. It should not have to rent its understanding of that intelligence.

Model Culture

Independence

Use the intelligence that fits the work

Organizations should be able to use the intelligence that makes sense for the work, whether it comes from a commercial provider, an open-weight model, the cloud, local infrastructure, or a future system.

Independent understanding is the point. The organization should retain the evidence explaining what was evaluated, how it behaved, and why a decision was made, regardless of where that intelligence comes from.
